I was recently searching online for new things to read on topics related to my daughter, Emily. I was on a web site for a local program which is a nationally renowned Minnesota nonprofit that offers high quality, inclusive child care for children of all abilities. As I was poking around on their site I came across a tip sheet on person-first language. I guess to some degree I have thought about this before, but this tip sheet spells everything out so nicely. I tend to use the term special needs child a lot and after reading this quick tip sheet I will change my term to child with special needs. This tip sheet emphasizes the importance of putting the person first and the disability second. This makes sense because a person is not defined by their disability, they are defined by who they are internally. I thought I would post this here to share with you all. I hope it brings value to you as it has to me! Add Comment |
